every weekend I want to share what I learn through books and through people over the next year that I believe are good for others to know. Some thoughts will be purely motivational and others will be purely based off history and facts and opinions that I think all should know. One day and maybe one week I may choose to talk about unspoken history, biblical history, a good positive book, a good quote, mentorship, and so on. I hope you take apart and I hope the thoughts and facts are beneficial to you.

This week I was one of 21 young professionals who spoke to over 2000 students about various careers and the importance of education. I spoke at one high school and one elementary school. Over the week, the Houston Chapter for the Organization of Black Airline Pilots coordinated 6 pilots and 15 various business professionals to speak to 15 separate schools. (We all can help in some way. You can help in some way. If you don’t have flexible hours during the week, then find a program in the evening or on the weekend. There are organizations in every city that need more of you. This is what my latest book is about, “Black Americans, We Need You” www.briankrice.com

The book is about giving back and not pointing fingers.

Brian K. Rice: Who am I? I am the next person in line to receive your blessing. I need you to do whatever necessary to make sure you receive the blessings meant for you. I need you to go after your goals. I need you to secure your reward. I need you to discipline yourself. If you don’t do your part to secure the blessing meant for you then you are affecting me and all of the other people that are suppose to receive a blessing from you.

(I am educated and capable but no one will hire me and I need you to hire me when you become a manager. >>> I am thinking about dropping out because I don’t see the purpose of school and I need you to show me your real life example Mr. and Ms. Young Professional so I can see why it is important to stay in school and achieve. >>> I want to start a business but I don’t know where to start and I need you Mr. Successful Entrepreneur to show me how to put a business plan together. >>> I am a foster child with low self esteem and confidence because no one wants me and I need you to create your dream of running your youth program for foster kids. >>> Mom and Dad, I know you have a dream of getting married one day because I am your future child. I know you are still single because it will be a few years before I am born. I also know that you have not met yet because you are going to share your story with me when I turn six. I know you have not thought about the birth of me yet but what you are doing is affecting me, I need you to take care of yourselves, I need you to stop sleeping around so I can be born healthy with no diseases. >>> This is for the future leaders, future CEO’s, future managers, future entrepreneurs, future fathers, future mothers, and friends who have a dream of reaching an important goal of success in their lives. We need you do whatever necessary to reach your important goals. No excuses because too many lives are dependent upon you. This is especially true those who have a dream of starting a non profit community program. Your dream affects the lives of many. Step up and do your part so you can reach your goals successfully.)

Theodor Seuss Giesel: Today nearly every child has read The Cat in the Hat or Green Eggs and Ham, yet 27 different publishers rejected Dr. Seuss’s first book To Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street

Sidney Poitier: After his first audition, Poitier was told by the casting director, “Why don’t you stop wasting people’s time and go out and become a dishwasher or something?” Poitier vowed to show him that he could make it, going on to win an Oscar and become one of the most well-regarded actors in the business.

Jerry Seinfeld: Just about everybody knows who Seinfeld is, but the first time the young comedian walked on stage at a comedy club, he looked out at the audience, froze and was eventually jeered and booed off of the stage. Seinfeld knew he could do it, so he went back the next night, completed his set to laughter and applause, and the rest is history.

Vincent Van Gogh: During his lifetime, Van Gogh sold only one painting, and this was to a friend and only for a very small amount of money. While Van Gogh was never a success during his life, he plugged on with painting, sometimes starving to complete his over 800 known works. Today, they bring in hundreds of millions.

Steven Spielberg: While today Spielberg’s name is synonymous with big budget, he was rejected from the University of Southern California School of Theater, Film and Television three times. He eventually attended school at another location, only to drop out to become a director before finishing

Stephen King: The first book by this author, the iconic thriller Carrie, received 30 rejections, finally causing King to give up and throw it in the trash. His wife fished it out and encouraged him to resubmit it, and the rest is history,

Elvis Presley: As one of the best-selling artists of all time, Elvis has become a household name even years after his death. But back in 1954, Elvis was still a nobody, and Jimmy Denny, manager of the Grand Ole Opry, fired Elvis Presley after just one performance telling him, “You ain’t goin’ nowhere, son. You ought to go back to drivin’ a truck.”

Babe Ruth: You probably know Babe Ruth because of his home run record (714 during his career), but along with all those home runs came a pretty hefty amount of strikeouts as well (1,330 in all). In fact, for decades he held the record for strikeouts. When asked about this he simply said, “Every strike brings me closer to the next home run.”

Soichiro Honda: The billion-dollar business that is Honda began with a series of failures and fortunate turns of luck. Honda was turned down by Toyota Motor Corporation for a job after interviewing for a job as an engineer, leaving him jobless for quite some time. He started making scooters of his own at home, and spurred on by his neighbors, finally started his own business

Harland David Sanders: Perhaps better known as Colonel Sanders of Kentucky Fried Chicken fame, Sanders had a hard time selling his chicken at first. In fact, his famous secret chicken recipe was rejected 1,009 times before a restaurant accepted it

Walt Disney: Today Disney rakes in billions from merchandise, movies and theme parks around the world, but Walt Disney himself had a bit of a rough start. He was fired by a newspaper editor because, “he lacked imagination and had no good ideas.” After that, Disney started a number of businesses that didn’t last too long and ended with bankruptcy and failure. He kept plugging along, however, and eventually found a recipe for success that worked

Albert Einstein: Most of us take Einstein’s name as synonymous with genius, but he didn’t always show such promise. Einstein did not speak until he was four and did not read until he was seven, causing his teachers and parents to think he was mentally handicapped, slow and anti-social.

Winston Churchill: This Nobel Prize-winning, twice-elected Prime Minster of the United Kingdom wasn’t always as well regarded as he is today. Churchill struggled in school and failed the sixth grade. After school he faced many years of political failures, as he was defeated in every election for public office until he finally became the Prime Minister at the ripe old age of 62.

Michael Jordan: Most people wouldn’t believe that a man often lauded as the best basketball player of all time was actually cut from his high school basketball team. Luckily, Jordan didn’t let this setback stop him from playing the game and he has stated, “I have missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I have lost almost 300 games. On 26 occasions I have been entrusted to take the game winning shot, and I missed. I have failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”

The Beatles: Few people can deny the lasting power of this super group, still popular with listeners around the world today. Yet when they were just starting out, a recording company told them no.
Raising Him Alone is the vision of David Miller and Matt Stevens. It is based on Miller and Stevens’ collective work to improve the life chances of African American males. Miller and Stevens were compelled to join forces to create an advocacy campaign that focused specifically on supporting single mothers raising boys.

When I was writing my book Black Americans, We Need You!, the Changing Fatherhood program is by far one of the best programs I have seen in the country when it comes to resources for fathers and getting fathers activated. I loved the program so much that I listed this program first in my book. David Miller is unlike many, he stopped talking about the concerns and he helped start and create different programs to address the concerns that many of us mention in general conversation. I have great admiration for David and this great program.

Changing Fatherhood recognizes that many fathers fall into several categories:

Come Back Dad - Fathers who have been away in prison or struggling with physical and/or emotional challenges

Long-Distance Dad - Fathers who don’t live in the same states as their children

Emotionally Unconnected Dad - Fathers who have not figured out ways to connect emotionally with their son due to other of factors

Revolving-Door Dad - Fathers who are in and out of their son’s life

Dad In Need of Support - Fathers who have made many mistakes but want to become better fathers

Exceptional Dad - Fathers who are dedicated and committed

AND MORE…

When you get a chance I recommend that you sort through the Changing Fatherhood website which I listed below if you are looking for ideas on how to be a better father or if you are looking for ideas on how to reach the absent fathers. If you are looking for all types of positive ideas that stretch across Black America, I strongly encourage you to support my latest book Black Americans, We Need You! (www.briankrice.com) which highlights over 300 different community programs, over 200 community organizations, 70 plus detailed positive community examples in the Black Community stretching from Fatherhood to Crime Prevention to Education Development to Economic Development and Much More. You will be encouraged to make a difference with the many real life examples. Watch Video below

Why I wrote this book?

Black Americans, We Need You!

I honestly had so much trouble finding positive books on Black America that focused on solutions that it motivated me to collect every positive resource that I could find. I became sick and tired of going to major bookstores only to find books that focused on the problems, the causes of the problems, the history, the concerns, and the complaints. I created this book for the sole purpose of showing Black Americans what others in Black America are doing and can do to make a positive difference. We have heard the problem so much that each one of us can recite the problems without any book but can we recite ideas and act out the ideas on how to move forward. I pray that this book will give those who care about the advancement of Black America ideas on how to make it better from the grassroots level to the national level. I am hoping that more people take it upon themselves to help those they can help. If you only have time to encourage one child, then encourage that one child with excellence. If you have a little more freedom and you have enough time in your week to inspire 5 or 10 children or adults with your living example, then inspire excellence in 5 or 10. If you have the time and resources to positively affect the multitude then affect the multitude with excellence. I sincerely hope more will be inspired to give back in or near their communities after reading and learning from the many examples from across the country that are displayed in this book.
Black Americans, We Need You!

If you are looking for a book that will give you a range of ideas on how to make a positive impact in the African-American community, then “Black Americans, We Need You!” is the book.

This book has:

400+ pages of solutions focused on the improvement of Black America

300+ community driven organizations identified across Black America

200+ community empowering programs across Black America

70+ detailed non-profit & for-profit community examples across Black America

Black Americans, We Need You! has been written with the hope that the examples and writings within the book will inspire and encourage ordinary African-Americans to step in and help those they can.

Brian K. Rice: Did you talk to someone positive yesterday or the day before that or the day before that? Are you going to talk to someone different that is positive today and tomorrow? (On this past Sunday as I was been challenged with the temptations of this world, I said from now on I am going to make sure I talk to positive good hearted people everyday. I am going to start off by picking 7 good brothers that have HIS spirit in them and I am going to talk to one of them at least every day during the week and I challenge each of you to find good people to talk to each day in your life. It is easy to get side tracked by life. The temptations of life are strong and we all need a strong team of people around us. It is too easy to only talk to our inner circle of a few people. I plead with you to stretch your thinking and make a list of all the good hearted positive people you have come across in your life. Some of these people, you may not have talked to for years. Others, may have only been associates of associates but you noticed them as good people. Reach out to them and keep them in your life on a regular basis. Some of the people may be much older or younger, some of these people may not be as strong as you are in character but can benefit from regular positive conversation. Take your best friends off of the list because you already talk to them and challenge yourself to find at least 7 people so you can have someone positive to communicate with each day. If you plan to get better like I plan to get better then you need to fill your life with good people who are going to make you better. (B. Rice)

Yesterday as I was waiting on my flight in Baltimore, MD I decided to do a little exploring. I went to a few black history museums but only one was open and I thoroughly enjoyed it. As I was driving to each museum, I saw two different worlds. One world was very progressive and the other world was full of unimaginable depression. This world full of depression seemed to go in every direction once you leave the progressive area of the Harbor. I have heard people talk about how dangerous Baltimore was and those thoughts were going through my head as I was driving around. Those thoughts did not scare my curiosity away and that is because I know who sent me there and HE has not forsaken me. I drove and drove and the passion I have for our community grew in me even more. It seemed like every 3 out 5 row houses had a “red X” on them which is a sign letting the citizens know that the building is structurally unsafe. In between each of these row houses were everyday homes for many African Americans. It seemed like I was watching a movie as I drove from block to block watching depression repeat itself. Within each block of row houses you would see a group of young men sitting or standing on the corner. Within each block of row houses you would see what appeared to be very frail females that looked as if they were strung out on something. Within each block you would see various age groups from the young kid to the grandma and probably great grandma’s in some cases just watching life pass by. Within each block you would see half burned row houses. At every red light near the row houses, you would see homeless people with a sign. At every red light you would see someone selling bottle water. Every so often, you would see a police cruiser. You can look in any direction and you would see the same thing even on the main streets. On North ave, the cemetery at the top of the only hill I saw look like the entrance of a fine castle from a distance but as I got closer, more depression set in as I realized it was a cemetery.

I have seen projects and hoods in various cities and each one of the touch me in their own way. What I saw in Baltimore hurt me to my soul. I saw one white homeless man in the middle of a heavily populated African-American area with a sign that said “this is a cruel world, help me please”. Unlike most homeless people I have seen, he walked with his sign never looking up as he walked passed each car. His clothes and partial shoes were probably in the worst condition I have witnessed. This homeless man and his sign sparked something new in me. I try my best to find a positive in everything and I found a positive through the sign of this homeless man. The sign said, “this is a cruel world, help me please” let me know that if that homeless is still walking, still trying to live, and has not ended his life regardless of how cruel this world is, let’s me know that there is still hope within him. I realized that if there is still an ounce of hope in this homeless man then there is still hope in the spirits of every down and out person who is still alive. I believe that it is hope that is keeping people alive other than that they will end there life abruptly. Those people in dire poverty and depression that I saw on those steps and those corners still have hope. I believe most people believe that there is brighter day coming even if that belief has been beaten down by life and circumstances. I believe as long as there is hope for the future, then people are going to keep holding on.

If someone with a heart of purpose and a heart of care came across some of these people on a consistent basis then that hope can be transferred to PROGRESS. We need everyone with the spirit of giving back to get out of your seats and find a way to give back monetarily and physically to our community. Save one life if you can. Save ten if you can. If you have the gift of celebrity status, save a million if you can.

It easy to point the finger and place the blame on the people living in those environments. For others it easy to point the finger at the system. It is easy to point the finger. After seeing what I have seen in so many places full of depression it is obvious that it hard to see the beautiful horizon when everything around you is bleak and dark and gloomy. I plead with you to shine your light of knowledge on those you can. I plead with you to open the curtains of life and let the sunshine of your example shine on someone without your vision. I plead with you let others see your positive example so they can be encouraged with other ideas. I am not naive, I understand that everyone does not want to be helped, but I do understand that a lot of people would liked to be helped. It is up to you who care, to seek out and find those that you can help. Don’t tell me you are too busy. Don’t tell me that the show you watch on TV is more important. Don’t tell me that you work too much overtime at work therefore you don’t have time. Don’t tell me what you can’t do. Show me what you can do.

Today is August 1st, 2011 and I was not planning to announce the availability of my newest book for another week or so but because Baltimore touched my spirit yesterday, I realized that I should not wait any longer to make this announcements. Today is the day that I release my proudest book to the public. The name of my book is “Black Americans, We Need You!“. The purpose of the book ties to what I saw yesterday. The purpose of the book is to encourage all African Americans to give back in some way. Go to www.briankrice.com for more information

I just read the greatest real life love story ever about Madison Washington which took place in 1841. I am reading from the book titled “The Black Man” written by William Wells Brown in 1865. Brown would be considered the first African American historian in our history. If Carter G. Woodson is considered the father of Black History, then Brown would be the Grandfather or Great-Grandfather. Brown highlights about 50 short biographies of early African-Americans from pre-emancipation in this book:

here is my quick write up which does not do it true justice. Madison an ex-slave from VA escaped to Canada but was so depressed and distressed because his wife was not with him. He worked on a farm in Canada until he raised enough money and learned enough as he gave up recreation to learn how to read and plan to get his wife. He eventually left the farm in Canada. First he traveled for weeks then he hid in the woods for days, waiting for the perfect opportunity to greet his wife. He miscalculated the time that his wife would be sent to her slave quarters. The white slave owners showed up first and he fought for his life and was beaten severely by several of the whites and then jailed and then sold into slavery again. The ex-slave now slave again figured he would be caught so he sewed small cutting tools into his cloths. He was chained to one of the ships and shipped with 134 slaves from from Hampton, VA area to New Orleans. While captured he selected 18 men who were also chained up to revolt against the sailors and new owners. They filed there chains off one by one each night with the cutting tools he sewed into his cloths. Nov. 7, 1841 they took the “Brig Creole” ship by storm, one slave was killed in the process and several whites were severely injured and the other slaves were getting ready to kill them and Madison stepped in between them and said “no”, we will be the better men and we will show true compassion for those who showed no compassion for us. He personally dressed their wounds and had them cared for. They held the captain by gunpoint and told him to sail the boat to a safe land. After their short victory, the slaves celebrated by cooking the finest meal they had ever received. They cooked a feast of feast. As the other slaves were set free from their cells. Madison had no idea what was about to happen. His wife, Susan, who he thought he lost forever came out with the other women. They cried and cried tears of complete joy. The rest of the slaves on the boat cried with them. The captained sailed the ship to Nassau, Bahamas and they lived their in freedom for the rest of their life. REAL BLACK HISTORY.
